Here are some straight up steps for you to start shading right away. Keep in mind that there are many ways to approach shading. This is just one!<\/p>\n<p>1.) Sketch your subject<br \/>\n2.) Add dark values<br \/>\n3.) Add a light values<br \/>\n4.) Add the midtones<br \/>\n5.)\u00a0Draw cast shadows<br \/>\n6.) Define the highlights<br \/>\n7.) Final touchups<\/p>\n<p>These are the tools I&#8217;m going to use:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1nOMkaP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Kneaded eraser<\/a>\u00a0(you can use a hard plastic eraser too. It&#8217;s just easier with the kneadable one)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2lXwECZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Pencils &#8211; HB, 2B, 4B<\/a>\u00a0(or you can use one pencil and vary the pressure for different values)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h2><strong>Step 1: Sketch the Shape of Your Subject<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This is my subject:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5397\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/How-to-Shade-RFA_Sumo-Reference-Photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"484\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/How-to-Shade-RFA_Sumo-Reference-Photo.jpg 484w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/How-to-Shade-RFA_Sumo-Reference-Photo-272x300.jpg 272w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/How-to-Shade-RFA_Sumo-Reference-Photo-381x420.jpg 381w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/>Use a hard pencil such as an HB to lightly sketch your subject.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sketching darker than I should, so you can see it clearly. But you should keep the outlines as light as possible. Select a shading technique (or two) for the drawing. I&#8217;m using the hatching technique because I think it&#8217;s the easiest and fastest way to shade.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5410\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RFA-How-to-shade-for-beginners-2_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"392\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RFA-How-to-shade-for-beginners-2_1.jpg 392w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RFA-How-to-shade-for-beginners-2_1-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RFA-How-to-shade-for-beginners-2_1-336x420.jpg 336w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/>Along the darkest areas of your subject, shade a medium layer of graphite. I&#8217;m using a 2B. Here, I&#8217;m using a 4B.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h2><strong>Step 3:\u00a0Apply a Layer of Lighter Graphite<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Since the subject is fairly light, I&#8217;m going to define the highlights at the very end. If your subject is dark, use the <a href=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/2017\/01\/03\/drawing-technique-1-shadow-lining\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shadow-lining technique<\/a> to outline your highlights now and then shade around it.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at the reference photo again. Where are the highlights and what value are they?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5397\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/How-to-Shade-RFA_Sumo-Reference-Photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"484\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/How-to-Shade-RFA_Sumo-Reference-Photo.jpg 484w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/How-to-Shade-RFA_Sumo-Reference-Photo-272x300.jpg 272w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/How-to-Shade-RFA_Sumo-Reference-Photo-381x420.jpg 381w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><strong>Answer:<\/strong> The highlights are located on the right side of the\u00a0body and\u00a0the brightest areas appear to be <strong>white<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We cannot leave any other part of\u00a0the drawing white because this value is reserved for the brightest point of each highlight.<\/p>\n<p>I see a lot of beginners shade only the darkest values and leave the rest white &#8211; which is what I used to do as well. It was a big obstacle for me and it took a lot to get over. It wasted a lot of my time&#8230; time I could have spent leveling up!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5412\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RFA-How-to-shade-for-beginners-3_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"467\" height=\"511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RFA-How-to-shade-for-beginners-3_1.jpg 467w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RFA-How-to-shade-for-beginners-3_1-274x300.jpg 274w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RFA-How-to-shade-for-beginners-3_1-384x420.jpg 384w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 467px) 100vw, 467px\" \/>So use a light pencil such as an HB to shade a medium\/light shade of grey over the entire drawing. Since the highlights appear along the outer edge of the subject, I\u00a0shaded past the\u00a0body so that later when we add the highlights, there will be a higher contrast between the subject and the background.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5400\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/shading-dos-and-donts_line-thickness.jpg\" and close together.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5413\" darken the facial features and hair so it looks more interesting :)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Step 4: Add the Midtones<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5401\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Shading-Example_Layering.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Shading-Example_Layering.png 657w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Shading-Example_Layering-300x96.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/>Now that we have dark and light values, we&#8217;ll need to soften out the transition between the two by adding medium values in between.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5414\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RFA-How-to-shade-for-beginners-4_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"513\" dark and light values to soften out your shading.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2357\" it&#8217;s between HB and 4B.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2403\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Gradual-Shading-Transition-RFA-sm.jpg\" alt=\"Gradual Shading Transition RFA\" width=\"398\" height=\"109\" avoid abrupt shading transitions.\u00a0The more gradual your shading is, the more smooth your edge becomes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full build the shading up slowly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h2><strong>Step 5:\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Add Some Cast Shadows<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Where is the light coming from? Draw cast shadows to give the piece more contrast.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5417\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RFA-How-to-shade-for-beginners-5_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RFA-How-to-shade-for-beginners-5_1.jpg 473w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RFA-How-to-shade-for-beginners-5_1-282x300.jpg 282w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RFA-How-to-shade-for-beginners-5_1-394x420.jpg 394w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/>There are shadows on the ground around the feet. Define the boundaries between the feet, belly and ground by drawing outlines where appropriate. The center of each highlight should be the lightest. That&#8217;s a topic for another tutorial!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bonus<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a much simpler example of an apple:<\/p>\n<h2><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5407\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/how-to-shade-step-by-step_Apple-example.jpg\" alt=\"how to shade step by step\" width=\"693\" height=\"103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/how-to-shade-step-by-step_Apple-example.jpg 693w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/how-to-shade-step-by-step_Apple-example-300x45.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 693px) 100vw, 693px\" \/><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The 2nd and 3rd step are switched: I shaded a base layer of graphite first and then added the darkest values because unlike the sumo, which is made up of a combination of basic geometries, the apple is made up of <strong>one basic geometry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If I were to shade a base layer on the sumo before adding the darkest values, the outlines would all disappear &#8211; making it hard to redraw details like the facial features, fingers, toes, etc. Here&#8217;s a small example:<\/p>\n<h2><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5425\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sumo-Shading_Base-layer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"422\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sumo-Shading_Base-layer.jpg 422w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Sumo-Shading_Base-layer-300x139.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 422px) 100vw, 422px\" \/><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Homework Assignment + Challenge<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Your homework assignment is to pick any subject and draw + shade it 3 times.<\/p>\n<p>For the first drawing, set a timer for 3 minutes. The second drawing should be set to 5 minutes. For the final piece, set it for 30 minutes.
